It's Taken Me a Year to Get over Attack Ordeal, Sa/ Callum

AN ASSAULT victim whose cheek-cheek bone was smashed in an unprovoked attack says it has taken a year to recover from the ordeal.

Callum Ford was at a New Year's party in the early hours of 2014 when he was attacked as he sat quietly on the sofa.

As reported, his assailant, Dwaine Vincent, 40, of Ferndale Avenue, Brambles Farm, Middlesbrough, repeatedly punched him in the face.

Vincent was given a 15-month prison sentence suspended for 18 months with supervision, an anger management course and 200 hours' unpaid work after admitting inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Teesside Crown Court heard how Vincent asked his lawyer "to apologise to the complainant for the injuries."

But Callum says the fall-out from being "in the wrong place at the wrong time" has stayed with him all year.

And he was upset after the story was reported in The Gazette to read a few social media comments suggesting he might have been to blame in some way.

He said: "Some of those comments did upset me because, to this day, I have no idea why I was attacked."

He also stresses he wasn't the person mentioned in the report who had his feet on a coffee table and ended up being assaulted by Dwaine Vincent's brother Jeffrey, 44.

Recalling the night, Callum said he had been out for a New Year's Eve meal with partner Jacqui Johnson and several family members before, after midnight, heading to the Pallister Park home of a colleague from Morrisons, where he used to work.

He said: "When we arrived, everyone was quite merry, saying Happy New Year.

"We sat on the sofa but I don't even think I was talking much, I was mainly just listening. The next thing, this man I didn't know was repeatedly hitting me in the face. I can't remember much after that. …
