Private Tom Allan wrote from a military hospital in London on September 16, to Mrs R. Lancaster of Casino.

Dear Madam, I am extremely sorry to have to tell you the sad news of your son, Private G. A. Lancaster, 1584, 9th Battalion, 3rd Reinforcements, death. I cannot give you any particulars. I happened to be reading a British-Australian paper dated 9th September. I am trying to get full particulars. I feel very much cut up about George, as we were great friends. We exchanged our addresses, so that if anything should happen to me he promised to write and let my mother know of it; and I promised faithfully to do the same for George. I am sure George died bravely. We were in many a charge together, and I know George was an honest, straightforward, and brave soldier. …
