TAKING the first steps of an AFL career against a competition powerhouse is a baptism of fire the Brisbane Lions coaching staff is considering for its newest draftees.

In a sign the Lions want to have a good look at the young talent the club has on offer when they come to Coffs Harbour to face the Sydney Swans on Friday, March 6, the club's NEAFL coach Shane Woewodin said dates on birth certificates won't be taken into consideration when selection time comes for the NAB Challenge matches.

"If they do the program and we feel like they are competitive at training, they will get a chance," Woewodin said. "We will build up our competitive work in January and if we feel they are ready, they will be given a go, but if not, they won't play."

Considering the Lions gave up draft picks 5, 21 and 25 to secure the services of Dayne Beams and Allen Christensen during the trading period, some have shown surprise that young players picked up late in the draft might be ready so soon for the rough and tumble of AFL
