Harbour Artificial Reef Plan Goes to Council

A MOTION to investigate the construction of an artificial reef at Tweed Heads' Jack Evans Boat Harbour will come before Tweed Shire Council's first meeting of the year on Thursday night.

Mayor Gary Bagnall has proposed that council explores the idea of using reef ball technology to construct the reef in the waterway.

Reef Ball Australia director David Lennon said there were already 4000 of the units in use in Australia.

Cr Bagnall wants council's report to consider a trial reef ball placement, which could be expanded to create a larger feature.

Meanwhile, a motion by Cr Barry Longland proposes the entrance gates to Black Rocks Sports Field at Pottsville be removed "as a matter of urgency", a suggestion which already has koala campaigners up in arms.

Cr Longland is also calling for a report be brought to a future council meeting with recommended options to address the impacts of "hooning" behaviour on the entrance road to the playing fields.

In his background notes provided in the council agenda, Cr Longland says the trial of locking the gates at night has "proved to be a failure with significant negative impacts for the public". …
