THE SUNSHINE Coast is one giant step closer to gaining a $90 million water park featuring the world's largest surf pool.

The Sunshine Coast Council will vote next week on the development application for the mammoth theme park proposed for Steve Irwin Way.

Even though the project falls outside of the planning scheme because it is in a rural zone, council officers are recommending approval with conditions.

Sunshine Park (Qld) Pty Ltd's application, which was revealed in the Daily in July last year, gained a groundswell of "yes votes" from the community and online bloggers.

The water park would be comprised of a large surf pool, various smaller pools, lagoons, waterslides and other play structures.

There would also be hotel and cabin-style, short-term accommodation.

The site is located on 24.77ha of rural land near the Mooloolah BP service station, close to Ewen Maddock Dam.

Council officers are recommending approval as the proposed development "is considered to be generally consistent with the SEQ State Planning Regulatory Provision". …
