ROCKHAMPTON is missing out on its share of more than $50 million a year.

But the solution is in the hands of tourist organisations, one of the state's leading experts on the subject says.

According to Tourism and Events Queensland, domestic reef visitors spend about $497 each during their stay.

This adds up to $924.1 million annually.

Tourism author and academic Brent Ritchie says bringing 5% more visitors to the Southern Great Barrier Reef region will bring an extra $57 million into local coffers annually.

The University of Queensland School of Tourism head said the Australian tourism market was ripe for the picking, thanks to falling fuel prices.

"In terms of domestic tourism, the drive market is pretty significant," Associate Professor Ritchie said.

He said delivering more options for visitors was also vital.

"Rockhampton needs to focus on food."
