For College Towns, They're No. 20; Gainesville and Its Gators Rank Highly, but Jacksonville Falls Short

As college towns go, Jacksonville is, well, not so great. That may not be a surprise when the city is ranked along with smaller towns that revolve around a major university.

But the people at WalletHub, who are always ranking something, have put them all in order. It ranked 280 college towns across the country based on a variety of academic, social and economic statistics. It included everything from the cost of a two-bedroom apartment to the amount of nightlife options per capita to the crime rate.

Oxford, Ohio, home to Miami University, came in first. Yonkers, N.Y., home to some smaller schools that likely few outside of the city have heard of, came in 280th and dead last.

Jacksonville came in pretty far back at No. 246, ranking particularly low in "youth-oriented environment," which includes percentage of students and other young people, amount of nightlife and shopping centers and crime rate.

Gainesville, home to the University of Florida, was easily the highest-ranked college town in the state at No. …
