NEWCASTLE'S girls are ready to roll as they get their skates on for British Roller Derby Championship action.

The Newcastle Roller Girls kick off their campaign in the inaugural competition at Manchester Academy on Sunday. The Walker-based squad is one of dozens of sides involved in the new league, which is being launched by the UK Roller Derby Association.

Head coach Kerri 'Kalamity' James is confident they will give a good account of themselves.

She said: "We are feeling really strong going into the 2015 season.

"We have been training hard with a renewed focus and new strategies this month and are looking forward to getting on track and showing everyone what we have been working on.

"We are heading into Sunday's game with most of our regular primary jammer rotation and are looking to show people we have not lost our touch.

"We had a disappointing rematch with Manchester's other A team Rainy City Roller Girls in our last game but were missing so many key players.

"We have made bold rostering choices as well which we are hoping will pay off."

She was backed by co-captain Stephanie Lai who said: "I am looking forward to seeing how the British Championships can shape the derby landscape here in the UK.

"We are starting the year with a plethora of very talented skaters so the rest of the teams in our league had better watch out."

Returning co-captain Penny Bizarre added: "I have been skating with Newcastle Roller Girls for around four years and throughout that time we have had pretty amazing women at the helm.

"It will not be easy to fill their shoes but I am proud and honoured to have been given the chance to try.

"We have big plans for 2015 and I am so excited to implement them with the help of my cocaptain.

"Bring on the British Championships - we are totally ready for it. …
