PICK OF THE DAY Midsomer Murders (8pm ITV) WHEN a woman is electrocuted by a booby-trapped roulette wheel, nobody in Midsomer is a bit surprised. This is the county where the main industry is bizarre murders - the more inventive the better. So much so that anyone with the nerve to die of old age here would probably get a stern telling off for not making more of an effort.

The setting for the first murder in this new series of four - The Dagger Club - is actually The Luxton Deeping Crime-Writing Festival so the stakes to impress are even higher.

Una Stubbs, Georgia Taylor, Lia Williams and James Lance are among the guest stars in a plot that includes a dead local crime-writer, some pulp-fiction style book-jacket illustrations and a newly discovered manuscript of the dead writer's final novel that absolutely everybody wants to get their hands on.

In these new episodes Inspector Barnaby and his wife Sarah (Neil Dudgeon and Fiona Dolman) are also the proud parents of baby Betty - named in honour of the show's creator, Betty Willingale who first discovered the Caroline Graham novels and created this genre of homely homicide. …
