TEAM Northumbria enjoyed a typically impressive start to 2015 with both the men's and women's teams boasting 3-0 wins over Wessex at Sport Central.

TN men faced a Wessex side just one place behind them in the Super 8 standings and coach David Goodchild took plenty of positives from a dominant display.

He said: "We set off really well.

"We have been working on a lot of things in training such as creating one-on-one scenarios and there were positive signs in respect to that.

"On paper the Wessex side is good and so I was happy with how we played.

"I would just say we probably need to work on our block defence in certain areas."

Goodchild pinpointed the contributions of Peter Bakare and Andrew Clayton and added: "Pete and Andy in particular worked really hard to create opportunities for our outside players to get the ball on the floor."

Nathan French also impressed to gain the MVP and Goodchild said his close-season signing 'led by example.'.

TN women remain unbeaten in this season's Super 8s competition and are yet to drop a set - a feat Goochild described as 'phenomenal.'.

However, the coach was not as overwhelmed with his team's performance as with he was with the statistics. …
