NORTHUMBERLAND'S first team lost 8-7 to Notts Seconds in Division Three North of the Senior County Championships.

However, they remain third in the division behind Lothian - who they entertain on March 1 - and Ulster.

With Tom Appleyard absent through injury, Garrylee McMullen was called up and Robyn Luckley made her firstteam debut.

Philip Pahatouridis soon had North on the scoreboard, overcoming Manik Chakravarti in two sets.

Lucy Dixon was just edged out 23-21 in the second by the powerful Victoria Ringland and, despite a three-set effort from Hilda Carr against ex-Isle of Man player Kim Clague, the score was locked at 2-2. Both of North's men's pairs started well, Malcolm Lightbown and Steve Swan so well against Chakravarti and six foot four Ben Sanders they took their opening set to nine.

They trailed 7-2 in the second but came back well only to be just edged out 21-19.

The third set was nip and tuck but they were just pipped in the end by the same score. …
