Mum of Student in 'Sex Lies' Extradition Hell Feels 'Powerless'

ITALIAN lawyers have taken on the case of a Tyneside student facing extradition over allegations of sex lies.

tradition Serena Bowes, 21, maintains she was raped while on a college trip to Florence but faces extradition to Italy on false allegation charges.

Serena, who waived her right to anonymity, could face 12 years in prison if she is convicted on the charge.

on But now an Italian lawyer has taken on her case, as it is expected to progress through the courts.

Serena's mum Adele said that despite making some progress with the case, she still feels "powerless".

The 41-year-old, of Walker, Newcastle, said: "I just feel powerless - I haven't got the powers to do anything.

"Nobody can do anything until the courts act, and we don't even know if the case has already been heard yet."

The solicitor was appointed to the family by the English Embassy in Italy but Adele feels she is still being left in the dark.

Adele said: "I'm sort of stuck in a position at the minute.

"They've appointed a solicitor and she doesn't speak English."

Serena was on an undergraduate trip with Newcastle College to Florence when she says she was raped in a unisex toilet in a nightclub.

But she was horrified when, weeks after returning home, she was accused of falsifying the claim - a charge which could result in up to 12 years in an Italian prison.

The former Sacred Heart School school pupil was on the trip to Italy last May as part of her fashion course.

The student said she and a group of friends were having a night out when she started chatting to a man in a nightclub. …
