NEWCASTLE United insist it would take an "exceptional" bid to take Moussa Sissoko from St James' Park - despite the player himself claiming he's pining for the Champions League.

United are relaxed about an interview that Sissoko gave with Foot Mercato in France where he said he would be open to an approach from Paris Saint Germain and said he would listen to offers in January. Newcastle have not disciplined Sissoko, who also said he was happy to stay at United if no offers came in January.

Privately, that is what Newcastle expect to happen - with PSG not having identified him as a primary January target. Arsenal have shown no interest in the France midfielder while Liverpool, who have actually watched him, are not going to invest. Newcastle have not put a price on Sissoko but it would surely take more than PS15million to lure the former Tou-Turn to Page 68 FROM BACK PAGE louse midfielder.

Sissoko sparked fears among United players by saying he WOULD listen to clubs in January: "It does not depend on me. I am under contract with Newcastle.

"If a club wants me, they will discuss it with my agent and with my club. Would the club let me go? There are many things that come into play.

"My goal is to play at one of the biggest clubs, but it is not up to me. …
