McLean Could Make England Return for Sevens; RUGBY UNION

WOMEN'S rugby World Cup winning captain Katy McLean could make her first England appearance since lifting the trophy in August, after she was selected in the 14-woman preliminary squad for the rugby sevens.

McLean will also make her first rugby sevens appearance since the 2013 World Cup sevens if she makes the final 12 for the second round of the Sevens World Series.

The rugby star from South Shields does not captain the sevens side, but is a welcome addition to the squad according to head coach Simon Middleton.

Middleton said: "Katy is obviously a world-class player so it is brilliant to have her experience."

McLean was not part of the sevens squad that earned a Plate (reward as losing quarter finalists in the competition) in the first stage of the tournament in Dubai in December and will hope to make an impact this time in Sao Paulo. The final cuts to the squad will be made after a weeks warm-weather training in Dubai ahead of the Sao Paulo stage, February 7-8. …
