Fishermen Slam ALP Ban Plan

ROCKHAMPTON'S Dave Swindells yesterday slammed the ALP's proposed policy to manage fishing in the Fitzroy River and Keppel Bay areas saying it would cost the region jobs.

The commercial fishermen said Labor's policy was nothing more than an attempt to poach votes.

The policy, announced by Member for Rockhampton Bill Byrne and Keppel candidate Brittany Lauga earlier this week, was reported in yesterday's Morning Bulletin.

It would see commercial fishing outlawed from Corio Bay, inclusive of the Keppel Islands, the Fitzroy River and the Fitzroy Delta.

The ALP candidates announced that the new policy could deliver the region 20 times the revenue that the commercial fishing industry currently provided.

But Dave, 61, said the current system was sustainable and the proposal would come at a high cost.

"All this is going to do is cost a lot of jobs," he said.

"You're talking about 40-50 people affected by this. …
