Retail Chief Gives PS1.5m for Cancer Centre Surgical Robot

A BUSINESSMAN today donated PS1.5 million in memory of his late wife to enable the Royal Marsden cancer hospital to become the first in the country to get an advanced surgical robot. Former House of Fraser chairman Don McCarthy gifted the cash to the hospital in Chelsea, where his wife Diane was treated for bowel cancer, to buy the latest da Vinci Xi machine.

Mr McCarthy, whose wife died in 2007, said: "The Royal Marsden provided an excellent standard of care when Diane was ill and it is really important to us to give something back. It's great to know our donation has gone towards really exciting technology that will hugely benefit patients." With his children Hannah and John, Mr McCarthy watched as surgeons used the robot to operate on a colorectal cancer patient. Professor Martin Gore, medical director at the Royal Marsden said: "It is thanks to generous donors such as the McCarthy family that we can continue to be at the forefront of cancer treatment and research. …
