WITH smartphones replacing wallets and purses for many people today, the applications or 'apps' installed on your phone can be your electronic gateway to a whole new world.

From GPS mapping and location to banking, networking and file transfer, education, video streaming, order tracking, ticket purchases and mobile medical apps, smartphones are capable of a multitude of functions.

The rapid expansion in smartphone apps has seen a multi-billion dollar global industry develop.

Market research company Gartner found 102 billion apps were downloaded in 2013, 91% of which were free.

This explosion in popularity of apps was reflected in 2010 when the American Dialect Society named app their "Word of the Year."

While many apps are free, some cost a nominal fee, of which 20% to 30% goes to the distribution provider eg iTunes, and the rest goes to the app developer.

This has led some apps to be developed by self-taught "home" developers, like Yamba's Matt Jones, who receive royalties which supplements their income.

Entirely self taught from online tutorials, Mr Jones has developed the iSurfer, iBodyboarder and beach safety apps on both apple and android platforms.

From iTunes Mr Jones receives 70% of the cost of the app, but through android-based Google play he gets 85%.
