THE temperature wasn't the only thing sweltering at the weekend as Peter Murphy set the track alight at the CQLX saleyards.

Murphy screeched in his Suzuki Cappuccino, with the C Class driver taking out overall honours at the Central Queensland Motor Sporting Club pre-season motorkhana.

The 65 year old admitted he did not always record the fastest lap times but experience in the sport has shown him the value of consistency.

"I've been competing since I was 17, but only really became stuck into the events in the last couple of years," Murphy said.

"Sometimes you can over drive, you go too hard and it feels fast but it actually isn't.

"I just try and take the bends as fast as I can.

"I'm not a spectacular or talented as some of them young fellas."

Pre-meet favourite Karl Ward tore around the bitumen but wasn't quick enough to outclass an experienced Murphy who won by 29 seconds.

Murphy and Ward joined 42 competitors at the track, driving vehicles ranging from a vintage Excess Falcon to a modified Nissan Skyline. …
