Award-Winning Novelists Join Global Host of Writers on Folio Prize Shortlist

AWARD-WINNING novelists Rachel Cusk, Ali Smith and Colm Toibin are joined by an international line-up including a Kenyan debutante for the PS40,000 Folio Prize.

The rival to the Man Booker, which was established last year, today announced a shortlist strong on writers who explore and challenge the very act of writing. Most also teach the art. The list of eight books was chosen from 80 titles, selected by the prize's academy of writers and critics from works by English language writers around the world published in Britain in 2014.

"The books we've chosen explore vast themes time, loss, belonging, war, solitude, marriage and family, the making and the mystery of art with amazing vitality and grace," said the chair of judges William Fiennes. "We're excited by the ideas, voices and approaches represented here, and the way our shortlist shows the novel refreshing itself, reaching out for new shapes and strategies," he said.

Rachel Cusk, one of Granta's best young novelists in 2003, is shortlisted for a novel about a writer who, like herself, is a divorced mother of two. …
