Extra 100 Police Officers Armed with Tasers to Patrol the Streets

MORE police officers armed with Tasers are being deployed on the streets to meet the threat of a terrorist attack, the head of Scotland Yard said today.

Met Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said the extra officers were a response to the Paris shootings last month which left 17 people dead.

At present four officers armed with Taser stun guns patrol in two cars in each borough to counter threats from criminals armed with knives. In future an extra 100 or so Taser officers could be on duty at any one time, he said.

However, Sir Bernard rejected calls from the Police Federation that all frontline officers should be armed with the weapon. He told LBC radio: "In general terms I do not think it is necessary to arm everyone at the moment."

The commissioner's comments came as he praised his force's officers and staff as the city's "unsung heroes". At a bravery awards ceremony in London he said: "I cannot let today pass without praising the Met's unsung heroes, the 31,671 officers and 13,232 staff. …
