ONE of the first things Canadian farmers Kim and Barb Bamber noticed on their pit stop at the Toowoomba Saleyards was that sales were conducted outside.

"The cows come to you (in Canada)," Mr Bamber said.

Mr Bamber said he and his wife ran a farm in western Canada in Alberta and, when they head out to sales, it is a completely different atmosphere.

He said because it was so cold, the sales were conducted inside a building instead of out in the open like Australia.

"It's just too cold," Mr Bamber said.

Mr Bamber said he grew up on the family farm which was where his mother had been born.

He said the farm of 3500 acres ran 450 beef cattle.

He said the Canadian beef prices were huge, with steers going for as much as $1800 and heifers for $1650 (Canadian dollars).

Mr and Mrs Bamber were being shown around the Toowoomba Saleyards by Crystal Stark after a travel agent put them in touch after their cruise around New Zealand and Australia and a visit to Cairns. …
