BT Needs to Turbocharge Superfast Broadband Roll-Out, Says City Chief

A CITY chief has urged BT and other companies to "turbocharge" plans for superfast broadband across London.

Mark Boleat, chairman of the policy and resources committee at the City of London Corporation, warned the technology was "a couple of years" behind where it should be in the capital.

He called for BT bosses and other providers to sort out superfast broadband "blackspots" and connections in London within a year.

Some firms were sending staff to work from home, where they had access to faster broadband, he added.

"Areas of Tech City [in east London] and neighbouring boroughs have got appalling slow broadband," he said.

BT had come around to treating London's blackspots as a "priority", Mr Boleat said. But he added: "We want to see efforts turbocharged so people in central London have the same service they are getting in other parts of the country." BT insisted the infrastructure was in place to link up businesses in the capital to fibre optic cable trunk networks, through dedicated lines. …
