FOR married couple Charline and Lance Gadsby, Valentine's Day is about a lot more than hearts and chocolates.

Five years ago today, Mr Gadsby was in recovery after being gifted with a new kidney from his wife.

When he was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure at the start of 2009, Mr Gadsby was told he would be put on a kidney transplant waiting list, a process that could take years.

Mrs Gadsby knew she had to find another way to help.

"I found out I was a match for a kidney transplant and that was that. There was no over-thinking it. I knew what needed to be done," she said.

"There was a lot involved. I had to get emotionally and physically fit for the operation and Lance ended up being on dialysis for 12 months before the transplant could take place."

On February 12, 2010, both husband and wife made their way to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane to prepare for the operation that would change both their lives. …
