NEWCASTLE Eagles survived a very physical battle away at old foes Leicester Riders to make it nine wins in a row on Saturday.

In what was an incredibly hotlycontested game of basketball - with 44 fouls - it was the Eagles who came away with the championship points thanks to a 95-89 victory.

Scott Martin ended the first quarter with a spectacular threepointer from distance to help the North East side carry a 34-25 advantage into the next quarter.

Great defensive play and a string of baskets from the Tyneside club saw them take a 17-point lead halfway through the second quarter.

After such a close first quarter, Riders' coach Rob Paternostro was left wondering what went wrong as his team went in at the break trailing by 18 points.

A high-scoring first-half, which saw Martin, Andy Thomson and Rahmon Fletcher all reach double figures, ended with the Eagles leading 63-45.

After surrendering 16 points from turnovers, the home side knew they had given themselves a mountain to climb. …
