He's Certain It's Uncertain; but Whether He or the Weather Bureau Is Right Is Not Yet Clear

FARMER Sam Hyatt of Glenreagh has a method for predicting the weather.

"Whatever the man on the radio said the weather was going to be, I just said it would be the opposite," Mr Hyatt laughed.

"I tell you I reckon I was right just as often as he was."

However, as the Bureau of Meteorology predicted a low pressure system bringing over 300mm of rain this Friday for areas of the Clarence Valley, Mr Hyatt said it was exactly the sort of conditions that would lead to it.

"Years ago, it was always the cyclones that came down the coast that would bring the heavy dumps of rain," he said.

"Now it's the East Coast lows that really bring the big downpours, so if there's one out there I'd say we're in for some."

The predicted rain would be bad news for the farming community Mr Hyatt said, with the heavy rains likely to sour what was good grass cover.

"Conditions have been really good, we had a bit of flood rain that's put some moisture into the subsoil," he said. …
