YOUR article in yesterday's QT states there is an over-representation of indigenous youth in jail/detention.

Simple answers - justice reinvestment and bail programs.

However the government won't fund the simple solution.

The government gives money to religious organisations i.e. the Salvation Army to run programs.

What programs? I worked with indigenous youth for two years in the criminal system - they won't go to school, they have a heap of domestic and social problems, they want to work, they won't sit in a classroom to do a six-week course to get a certificate in whatever, they want something to do.

Address their issues and provide funding to an indigenous organisation to give them hands-on experience to get that certificate or that vital schooling and to address what is going on in their lives. Jail/detention is a rite of passage to these kids.

Some of these kids commit these crimes to go to detention so they have a bed and food and sporting activities. …
