It's difficult to compress all of Jack Nicklaus' accomplishments into a one-hour documentary but the United States Golf Association and Ross Greenburg Productions has finished the attempt.

"Nicklaus: The Making of a Champion" will air on Fox at noon Sunday, prior to the NFC championship game between Seattle and Green Bay.

The film obviously will center on Nicklaus' record 18 major championships, four of them U.S. Opens. He also won eight USGA Championships in all and said his 1959 U.S. Amateur title, in which he made an 8-foot putt to beat Charlie Coe, gave him the confidence that he could perform under pressure to win the most significant golf championships.

Greenburg, who has won 52 Sports Emmys, said he was most impressed by what Nicklaus' fellow players had to say.

"In interviews with his peers, Palmer, Player, Watson, Trevino, Woods, Miller ... they understood what a true champion was and Jack epitomized the word," he said.

The release of the movie comes three days before Nicklaus' 75th birthday on Jan. 21. The USGA will open the Jack Nicklaus Room at its Far Hills, N.J., headquarters on May 27.

The PGA Tour has told players and caddies they will not be allowed to throw, kick or otherwise propel items into the stands surrounding the par-3 16th hole of the TPC Scottsdale during the week of the Waste Management Open Jan. 29-Feb. 1.

The directive was posted in the locker room at this week's Sony Open. The Tour cited safety concerns in the fans attempting to catch hats, golf balls and small footballs players had traditionally brought to the hole to toss into the stands. Around 25,000 people can fit into the amphitheater setting.

The 2015 Tour schedule has been released, with the season beginning Feb. 26-March 1 in Panama and ending Oct. 1-4 with the Tour Championship at the TPC Sawgrass Dye's Valley.

The Tour opens, as has been the recent custom, with five events in Central and South America. …
