Writer, Artist Speak on Florida's 'Wild Side'; Belleville, Draper Plan to Focus on Aesthetics of Environment

Bill Belleville, a writer and documentary filmmaker whose frequent subject is Florida's environment, will speak at 1 p.m. Sunday in the theater at the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville, 333 N. Laura St.

After Belleville's presentation, "Celebrating the Wild Side of Florida: Portals into Nature, Culture, and Sense of Place," he'll be joined for questions by Jacksonville artist Jim Draper, whose art frequently documents and celebrates wild Florida.

Draper, who helped organize the event for the University of North Florida's Department of Art & Design, said he'd like to see the discussion center on "what kind of place to do we want Florida to be."

Their focus will be on what Draper calls "environmental aesthetics."

"We will talk about current issues such as dredging and unregulated development, not necessarily from the scientific point of view, but from a quality-of-life perspective," Draper said.

Draper was recently named UNF's coordinator of galleries, supervising the UNF Gallery in Founders Hall on the UNF campus, the UNF permanent collection and the UNF Gallery at MOCA, which is a UNF cultural resource. …
