ready, set, grow: We're making inroads into the untidiness that so often prevails at this time of year. I'm not the tidiest of gardeners but even I recognise the need for a spring clean.

If everything that follows is to look its best, then it is only fair to make sure it's not hindered by last year's old foliage and unkempt growth.

It's not like hoovering the house - it has to be much more drastic. And whereas housework has to be done on a regular basis, this garden spring clean has a now-or-never element. I've mentioned cutting back and raking up leaves and rubbish on numerous occasions but that is because so much has to be done over several months.

This, though, is the final push - it has to be because everything is chomping at the bit and getting ready for the starting flag to drop.

sow far: Despite the garden looking bare, there is a feeling that it is being unveiled - that it has purpose and hope. Paths are revealed, steps are laid bare and the garden reverts to its basic structure. …
