Season Is Not over Yet, Says Carver

JOHN Carver says he is determined not to let Newcastle United's season fizzle out after arguably its most tepid display.

The Magpies lost 5-0 at Manchester City on Saturday. It could and should have been more. With the hosts 3-0 up after 21 minutes, and five ahead within eight minutes of the restart, City chose to withdraw key players and conserve energy ahead of tomorrow's Champions League visit from Barcelona.

With a caretaker manager and no reinforcements added to the squad in the winter transfer window, the second half of this campaign looks like drifting as last season's did. Carver is adamant it will not.

"I'm not going to let that happen," Carver (right) insisted.

"If you know my character I won't allow that to happen. Some of the players in there (the dressing room) won't allow it to happen. We will drive them and make sure we try and get perfection every time we go out there. Sometimes we might not be good enough but we will give it our all.

"The season isn't going to come to a stop. That's not in my personality and it isn't for some of the players in that room. We'll not be thinking that we're safe and that the season's over.

"Our targets when we come to places like this (the City of Manchester Stadium) is to try and get something from the game. We've got 12 games and it's not about being comfortable where we are, because we're not.

"We know every point in the Premier League is hard to earn and Saturday - I said it to the lads - it's a free game because they are not expected to win. We know what league we are in and (Saturday's) game against Aston Villa at home is huge for us."

For all Carver's fine words, his players more or less allowed the 5-0 defeat to happen.

There seemed to be an air of resignation from the moment, after 28 seconds, when Turn to Page 48 John: We won't let our season fizzle out FROM BACK PAGE Vurnon Anita conceded a penalty trying to recover his heavy first touch. …
