KAREN Porter finds it impossible to choose one of her favourite Gladstone spots ahead of any other.

Whether it's her holiday home in Baffle Creek, the local beaches or a weekend getaway at Heron Island, Mrs Porter is in love with them all.

But it doesn't come down to scenery for the local councillor, but the freedom synonymous with it.

"I have lived in almost every state of Australia and also lived in New Zealand for a short time. Gladstone is a place to enjoy a high quality of life, to increase your skills and experience, to work and reap the rewards," she said.

"It is also a community to raise children and grandchildren. The region provides learning and work opportunities to ensure our kids and grandkids have employment choices and a sound financial future."

Mrs Porter now lives in Clinton. She arrived in Gladstone in 1989, but expected to stay only 12 months.

More than a quarter of a century later, she could not be persuaded to leave. …
