"THE road is a jungle full of idiots," Gympie Magistrate M Baldwin warned a drink-driver this week.

Mrs Baldwin provided "sobering" facts to a remorseful young man who had been surprised at his high reading.

Nicholas James Maher, 26, a diesel fitter of Bruce Hwy, Coles Creek, pleaded guilty in Gympie Magistrates Court on Monday to being in charge of his vehicle at Landcruiser Mountain Park, on October 29, with a 0.14% blood-alcohol content.

Solicitor Andrew Wiseman, appearing for Maher, told the court Maher had attended the Safe Driving Program and had already had five weeks off the road.

"He is a cattle farmer and a mining industry tradesman and his job is licence-dependent," he said.

"He was camping with friends and had six stubbies between 2pm and 7pm on an empty stomach.

"He's devastated that he was so far over the limit, and at losing his job.

"He's unemployed and heavily mortgaged," he said.

Mrs Baldwin said she had also attended the Safe Driving Program "because I don't like sending people to things I haven't been to". …
