"PLAY it again, Sam" has been misquoted since 1942 and we've all done it.

"Hasta la vista Baby", "I'm baaaack", "I'll have what she's having", and "We're gonna need a bigger...cliche", carried the can throughout the 70s, and 80s, which also ushered in musical themes impossible to get out of your head...The Twilight Zone theme, Jaws, Rocky, the Star Wars theme.

Close Encounters (1977) was a crossover in movie-world, it had the musical catchphrase, which only musicians could mimic, but also the title which hypnotised headline writers, talk show hosts, current affairs and newsreaders immediately.

They couldn't use (abuse?) the phrase enough. "Close encounters of the Nerd Kind", the Bird Kind, The Absurd Kind, etc., ad absurdum.

Okay, Up Close and Personal (1996) was an Americanism before the movie but became the most hackneyed title-turned-clichA[c] because of it and if I hear another journo use the expression I'm going to. …
