WITH smartphones replacing wallets and purses, the applications or "apps" can be your electronic gateway to a whole new world.

The rapid expansion in smartphone apps has seen a multi-billion-dollar global industry develop.

Market research company Gartner found 102 billion apps were downloaded in 2013, 91%of which were free.

This explosion in popularity of apps was reflected in 2010 when the American Dialect Society named "app" their Word of the Year.

While many apps are free, some cost a nominal fee, of which 20-30% goes to the distribution provider (eg. iTunes) and the rest goes to the app developer.
