I Escaped a War Zone in Sierra Leone - and Had a Gun Pointed at Me in Newcastle

A BRAVE dad has told how he wrestled a rie from the hands of an armed robber that threatened to shoot him.

Abdul Bangurn ed his native Sierra Leone after being shot by murderous rebels in the warzone.

But 10 years after settling on Tyneside the 35-year-old found himself at the centre of another gun drama when a masked raider tried to hold up his brother's shop.

Police are still hunting the would-be thief, who ed empty-handed after Abdul took his weapon, shown in shocking CCTV shop footage.

And today the fearless father-of-two has told the Chronicle how he took the gunman on.

Abdul said: "I was think-think ing he was going to shoot me so I just lifted my hands immediately. It was frightening, but I didn't know what else to do in that moment. I come from Sierra Leone and I have been shot before. I thought I had got away from all that. I escaped a war zone then had a gun pointed at me in Newcastle. I thought I was safe here."

" Abdul was behind the counter at the corner shop on Weleld Road, in Benwell, with his brother Mohamed Barri, 28, when the raider burst in on Tuesday night, brandishing what looked like a huge rie. His face hidden behind a scarf, the gunman pointed his weapon at Abdul's chest and demanded he hand over the takings. But, realising he had no other option than to try to save himself and his brother from being shot, Abdul reached for the gun.

"He pointed the gun at my chest and asked me to give him all the money," he explained. "I reached for the gun, grabbed the barrel and tried to twist it round so that if he pulled the trigger it would shoot the ceiling.

"Fortunately it happened when I was here and not when my brother was by himself."

" When Abdul managed to pull the gun from his attacker's hands the would-be robbered the shop empty-handed leaving his weapon behind. When police examined it, they discovered it was a BB gun.

e raid, which happened at just before 6.30pm, was caught on the shop's CCTV cameras. And police are now studying the footage. …
