A FEAR of flying is not uncommon, but tackling it by taking flying lessons probably puts a Hervey Bay-based University of Queensland medical student in a different category to most.

Now putting her private pilot skills to the test, Danielle Labinsky will take off from Bundaberg on Sunday in a borrowed Cessna 182 to participate in a first-of-its-kind relay to celebrate women in aviation.

Covering more than 18,000km, general aviation enthusiast, commercial pilots and military operators will be flying on pre-designed routes around the entire country over a six week period to promote women in aviation whilst raising funds for Cancer Council.

The baton is due to arrive in Bundaberg on Sunday when Heather Haynes and Nathalie Gochel fly a Foxbat from Caboolture with a convoy of planes with women pilots.

The baton will be handed to Miss Labinsky to be flown up to Mackay.

Miss Labinsky said there was a number of reasons behind the decision to take part in the relay. …
