Origin Could Still Be an Option for Injured Boyd

INJURED Brisbane fullback Darius Boyd has not ruled out playing State of Origin for Queensland this year as he steps up his recovery from a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Boyd, who will have his first "run" today since undergoing surgery in early December, still has an eye on an appearance for the Maroons -- possibly in game three of the series against New South Wales at Suncorp Stadium on June 8 -- almost six months to the day after he snapped his Achilles.

The former St George and Newcastle fullback, who is back with Brisbane after following his only coach, Wayne Bennett, around the NRL in recent years, has pencilled in a return for round 14, the week before Origin III.

Boyd (pictured) said he only needed to be a week or two ahead of schedule to be an outside chance of tossing his name up for Origin.

"If I can get back a little earlier than that it would be a bonus," he said.

"I will have my first run (on Friday) and go from there. It won't be too fast, more a quick walk and hopefully in the next few weeks we will have a better idea of my progress. …
