Lego's Creating Works of Art; Building Blocks Display Creativity

ANDREW Tuppen believes this century's answer to Michelangelo's David will be made of Lego.

The toy building blocks have been a household favourite for more than 80 years, but Mr Tuppen says the time has come for Lego to be taken seriously as an art form.

"It's already taken very seriously, particularly in France and places like that," Mr Tuppen said.

"The things they are creating are unbelievable and the possibilities for what you can create are endless."

Mr Tuppen is one of the 40 Lego enthusiasts - known as Adult Fans of Lego, or AFOLs - displaying work at Lake Kawana Community Centre this weekend.

The Sunshine Coast Brick Event began yesterday and is expected to draw more than 8000 spectators by the time it finishes this afternoon.

The displays ranged from lifelike replicas of popular Star Wars and comic book characters to intricate cityscapes like Mr Tuppen's replica of the Swiss town Lucern.

The display, which also had a replica of France's Chateau de Chenonceau, took more than 12 months to create and required research into the architecture and history of the town. …
