Natural Healers Warn of Pain; Massage Therapist Says Removal of Health Insurance Rebate a Bad Move

AXING natural therapies from the tax rebate for private health insurance providers would drive more people to public hospitals and increase the occurrence of preventable conditions, says local massage therapist Lesley Carter.

As reported in the Daily in January, a host of natural therapies including yoga and massage could lose their private health insurance rebate after a Federal Government review found there was little scientific evidence to support treatment claims.

A Palmwoods massage therapist, Ms Carter, was one of 6800 people who supported an Association of Massage Therapists petition against the rebate cuts.

Ms Carter specialises in the treatment of lymphoedema which causes fluid retention.

Manual lymphatic drainage to treat lymphoedema was a type of remedial massage that moved fluids around the body, she said.

It was a powerful technique that helped prevent the patient's condition from worsening, she said.

She said removal of the private health insurance rebate for massage would mean many of her clients would be left without help.

"I get some who are going to come no matter what but there are others I know who would be desperately upset because they couldn't afford to come any longer," Ms Carter said. …
