Where Have All the Polite People Gone?

LATELY I have become more and more ashamed of modern society.

It makes me sad when I flick on the news and hear about the horrible things people are capable of. And not just overseas, it's happening in our own backyards.

Fortunately, most people know the difference between right and wrong.

The "Average Joes" and "Janes" out there are generally pretty kind and courteous to one another -- but even average Joe seems to have turned bad lately.

My Average Joe epiphany all started with a trip to the delightful furniture Mecca over at Logan.

I am talking of course about Ikea.

In an attempt to be better organised, I decided a trip to Swedish heaven was needed.

It was busy as always, but that was to be expected. As we zig zagged around corners, sat on things and got lost half way through, an Average Joe in his thirties (who was quite obviously not enjoying his Ikea experience) pushed past and bumped into my son.

Now I know he's only tiny, but my six year old is not invisible. Fortunately he wasn't hurt and as I picked him up off the floor I expected to hear an apology.

I looked up. Joe was gone. No apology.

Scenario number two happened a couple of weeks ago while the three of us were doing the grocery shopping. It was a busy day and the checkouts were full. We lined up, we waited, we stacked our shopping and waited some more.

It came to our turn, the assistant scanned our groceries and we chatted briefly.

At the same time my kids were being kids. No different to any other shopping trip.

They asked for 101 things at the checkout and I said no. They hung off the metal bars and I told them to stop.

But as the assistant scanned my items, the elderly Average Joe behind us became visibly annoyed.

As I was paying he had the nerve to tell me to "hurry up" and proceeded to push his shopping trolley right into me, in front of my kids! …
