Police Chief Fires Warning on Cuts

A POLICE and Crime Commissioner has issued a desperate plea to the government as forces face more cuts.

Durham's Ron Hogg has warned of the strain placed on police as they come to terms with further reductions in their budget. Reacting to news that forces are facing a 5% cut in government funding in 2015/16, Mr Hogg urged authorities to re-think their strategy.

He said: "What we are doing is working very hard and in collaboration with Northumbria Police, Cleveland Police and the fire service in an attempt to save as much money as possible and drive out as many inefficiencies as possible.

"The government, and it doesn't matter whether it's Tory or Labour, needs to get its head around the fact that a certain amount of money is needed for policing. We had 1,750 police officers in 2007 and now we have 1,200.

"There comes a point were you have got to stop doing things and we are not too far away from that point. …
