Mackay's Beaches Have Surf Potential

SURFING: Think Mackay beaches and you don't think surfing.

However, for those in the know there is a way to catch some waves.

Heath Snedden, 36, has been living in Mackay all his life, and has been surfing for most of it.

"I just love being in the water, it's part of my life and I wouldn't change a thing," he said.

Although it's not a simple matter of heading to your local beach for surf, Snedden said when the conditions were right there could be plenty of action on the waves.

"Surf in Mackay usually only comes up when there's 30-knot winds. It's based on wind not swell," he said.

"We don't get a great deal of surf up here but if you wait around for the right time you might get a wave."

The last time conditions were perfect for surfing in Mackay was when Tropical Cyclone Marcia was lurking off the coast late last month.

"It was the day after the cyclone went past," he said.

"That day was definitely a special day, the surf was really, really good that day. …
