Life's Looking Good for 'Mismatched Couple'

GYM owner Stephen Black has knocked out the opposition to be crowned winner of the Punching Above Your Weight competition - and he walked straight into a champion's makeover.

e 36-year-old was entered into Metro Radio's controversial competition to nd the most mismatched couples in the looks department by his new wife Paula, who nally got around to telling him what she'd done when the radio station contacted her about her entry.

Early yesterday morning the pair, who married in September after meeting on a blind date four years ago, joined three fellow nalist couples - whittled down by public vote from hundreds of entries - to hear the results of the competition announced live on during the break-break fast show.

And while Stephen might have been used to taking some stick from mates since meeting hair salon owner Paula, it was worth all the "punching above your weight" comments when the public voted him winner.

"Yes, I'm nominated the most ugly," he joked.

"No, it's the most mis-matched," said Paula, 42, who has been caught up in intense social media campaigning for the past two weeks and added: "I've never slept!

"I'm overwhelmed - it's just fab. I might get some sleep tonight now."

e mum runs Paula Louise Hair Design in Jarrow, where the couple live, and said: "My sister, who works for me, saw the competition and said we should enter for a laugh, so, with customers sitting around, I got on the phone and sent a photo in and that was it.

"en when I got the phone call I thought I had better tell Stephen!

"He's good fun; he takes everything in his stride.

"He's up for a laugh and doesn't take life seriously - I knew he would take it as a joke."

And Stephen, who is originally from Sunderland, where he runs mixed martial arts gym Team Black MMA, was soon on board and campaigning just as hard. …
