I Don't Blame Immigrants

A MORE misleading and wrong letter than Hilton Dawson's attack on me (The Journal, March 6) it would be hard to find. I do not, have never, and never will, "blame immigrants" - I blame merely Government policy which allows unlimited immigration from the EU, causes unemployment and drives down local people's wages.

He claims that I "have no idea how many of the 298,000 net migrants to the UK actually came to the North East". Of course, neither does he - because he knows perfectly well that those statistics aren't collected by government. When he was a Labour Party MP from 1997 to 2005, net migration went from 48,000 per year to 267,000 per year (House of Commons Standard Note SN0677).

But perhaps I might refer him to the recent study by the Migration Observatory at Oxford University, which shows that the North East has seen the largest percentage increase of foreign-born residents anywhere in the country between 2011 and 2014.

What about his claim that people are "overwhelmingly coming here to work and study"? …
