Record Number in Work as Jobless Total Falls by 100,000

GEORGE OSBORNE was handed a Budget day boost today when the latest figures showed unemployment falling more than 100,000 to a near sevenyear low.

The jobless total stood at 1.86 million in the three months to January, an unemployment rate of 5.7 per cent. This was 102,000 less than the previous quarter and half a million down on a year ago.

The number of people in work is at a record high of almost 30.1 million, an employment rate of 73.3 per cent.

David Cameron said in a tweet: "The highest employment rate in our history is not a dry fact. It means more people with the security of a pay packet and a brighter future."

But GMB union general secretary Paul Kenny said: "The new jobs being created are mainly low-skilled, low-paid and very precarious jobs. …
