Winds Bring the Codling to Shore; SEA ANGLING

Article excerpt

Byline: Sam Harris

THE onshore winds of midweek lifted the sea away just long enough to bring a few codling inshore. Most of the rock edges north of Cambois have given codling. Unfortunately, the average size was only 1lb to 11/2lb.

There are reports of odd fish between 4lb and 6lb, but these have been few and far between.

There have been one or two codling from Hadston to 2lb and Cresswell Carrs has also been worth a cast. Newbiggin Bay has produced odd fish to 4lb. A variety of baits have worked, including crab, worm, mussel and razorfish.

Blyth Pier has given mainly undersize codling, whiting and flatfish, with only occasional keepable codling. Blyth beach, at night, when the sea has been running, has produced a few codling to 3lb.

Warkworth, Druridge and Alnmouth beaches are producing flounders, dabs, odd turbot and some small cuckoo ray.

The River Tyne, for anglers with fresh crab, has given codling to 3lb, although the majority of fish taken have been undersize.

South Shields Pier has produced a few codling to 2lb-plus, also some reasonable coalfish, but not in any quantity.

When Roker Pier has been open, there have been a few codling to 21/2lb and, at night, whiting with a few dabs and flounders.

The River Wear is still HOWDON AC Fished the River Tyne. Five rods took part and one weighed in. This was Titch Miller with two fish - a flounder of 9oz and a codling of 1lb 7oz.

ALBERTA SAC Fished the second match of their new season - 28 members took part and 26 weighed in. The competition was held at Walker Riverside Park. …
