A FAILED attempt at bringing together Gladstone and Rockhampton rugby league teams for a massive pre-season carnival did not deter Gladstone Rugby League operations manager Peter White.

Instead of lingering on the lost chance, the idea was quickly changed to a format which suited the local clubs better.

The Harvey Road Tavern Super Nines was born, and entries from Gladstone teams have been pouring in quickly.

About 30 matches will be played on Saturday, March 28, gates opening at 2pm.

White thinks the fans will be excited to open the local rugby league season in this fashion.

"It is quick, it is nine minutes a half and a two-minutes half-time break," he said.

The nines tournament has had a lot of following from the moment a plan was devised.

Harvey Road Tavern was the first to put support behind the carnival, and a week before teams cross the sideline the idea is proving a success. …
