TO paraphrase Morrissey, 'some wins are better than others'.

Of course, you only get three points for a victory regardless of whether it's against the leaders or the team propping up the league.

But to beat Derby on their patch could well be Boro's most signi-cant victory of the season.

To be honest, I would have taken a point at half-time. Not because Steve McClaren's team were on top and threatening to edge the sixpointer. But simply because avoiding defeat was paramount. A loss at the iPro Stadium would have left Boro fourth and, just as importantly, boosted Derby back into contention for automatic promotion.

A draw would have left Aitor Karanka's team right in the mix, level on points with secondplaced Bournemouth. A share of the spoils would have represented a solid night's work.

Prior to the eight days of destiny - Ipswich at home, Derby and Bournemouth away - most fans and journalists connected to the club tried to assess what would be an acceptable points haul. …
