MOOLOOLABA ironman Ali Day delivered a motivational message to Emu Park nipper Brodie Williams as thousands of surf lifesaving hopefuls descended on Maroochydore Beach for the first day of the Queensland Youth Surf Life Saving Championships.

The reigning Nutri-Grain Ironman Series champion told Brodie not to worry if he did not make a final this weekend.

"He said that he didn't make finals that much when he was younger," Brodie said.

"He said you don't have to be great when you are little. You can just keep working towards your goal."

Day is expected to return to action at next week's senior state championships, but yesterday the spotlight was on Queensland's next generation of lifesavers.

Almost 1500 of the state's top surf lifesavers from the ages of 11-15 will hit the sand and surf during the three-day event.

Maroochydore, which finished second overall last year by just one point, made a strong start, winning a number of events including the under-11 female surf board relay, U12 female surf board rescue, U13 male cameron relay, U15 female surf board relay and the U15 male surf board rescue. …
