THERE was another twist in the race for the championship when a superb performance by Bedlington Terriers toppled West Auckland from pole position, writes MALCOLM PRATT.

The visitors were favourites at Doctor Pitt Welfare Park, but found their match in Gary Innes' side which fully deserved a point from a goalless draw.

West Auckland showed why they are title contenders when they dominated the opening 20 minutes, but Terriers clung on and towards the end of the first half, began to make their presence felt up front.

Bedlington were the better team in the early stages of the second period and Lee Scott twice went close, but it was Terriers' defensive performance which shone through.

Guisborough Town moved into pole position, but were taken to the wire before defeating Whitley Bay by two goals to one.

Peter Watling's strike stunned the visitors, but the Seahorses lost their way when Alex Kempster had to leave the field during the first half. Luke Bythway soon levelled and a minute into the second half, Curtis Round struck the winner.

Marske United are also in the mix following victory at relegation-threatened Billingham Synthonia, after a brace by Josh McDonald.

Shildon, with at least two games in hand on the three sides above them, strengthened their challenge with victory at West Allotment Celtic, who are still looking over their shoulders at the other end of the table. Paul Connor (2) and Mark Doninger were the marksmen.

North Shields are fifth and Dunston UTS sixth, although their chances of finishing top receded when they were held to a goalless draw by Durham City.

Once again, hat-trick hero Michael Mackay was the star when Consett enjoyed a four-goal romp at Crook Town, where Aristote Lokonga also netted.

Newcastle Benfield continue to enjoy an excellent second half of the season and they moved to 10th with victory over Sunderland RCA, who are third from the basement. …
